Kidney Transplant – FAQ (Chad & Jeff)

Here are some frequently asked questions about the process: (More FAQ will be added as we compile them and try our best to answer them.)

Kidney Recipient – FAQ

How did this all start?

Read my post: In the beginning…

Do they remove your kidneys since they don’t work?

No, they add the donor kidney to my right side. (see visual). No sense removing the current kidneys that aren’t working great and mess with the ‘wiring’.

How long is your recovery expected to take?

4-6 weeks.

How long did you stay in the hospital?

6 days.

Do you have a lot of pain?

Of course, any major surgery would. In the hospital it was worse. But pain meds help subside it and walking helped as well. I still have small bursts of pain, my my pain level is pretty low.

What now, do you take a lot of medicine?

Yes, my daily pill collection from ‘the chemist’ is extensive. A variety of anti-rejection meds as well as meds to curb infections, blood pressure, and more.

So, does eating kidney beans help with your kidneys? (asking for a friend)

No, but clever question. LOL

Had you not gotten a living donor’s kidney, would you have gone on the black market? (asking for a friend)

No, no probably not. Their match criteria probably isn’t as strong as UNMC’s. And I doubt I could have used my health insurance plan.

Kidney Donor – FAQ

Which of your two kidneys do they remove?

Typically, the left one.

How long did it take you to recover from giving your kidney?

Believe it or not, I left the hospital the following day.

Why did you choose to donate?
How did you qualify to be a kidney donor?

A thorough evaluation was required to determine if I was a suitable donor. This included physical exams, blood tests, and psychological evaluations.

You aren’t related to Chad or your recipient, how does that work?

You can donate to a family member, friend, or even a stranger in need of a transplant.
