Second Chance: My experience with kidney failure.
By Calvin Whitfield

My journey with kidney disease was like a rollercoaster. After I was initially diagnosed, I wasn’t overly worried or concerned. Over time, and while I was receiving treatment, I would eventually learn how deadly kidney disease can be, especially since my kidney function wasn’t getting any better. In fact, it was getting worse. Once the talk of a kidney transplant and dialysis became the topic of discussion, everything changed. This change led to a new doctor, a new hospital, an evaluation to be placed on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, and dialysis. The trauma of my journey led to the writing of my memoir, Second Chance: My experience with kidney failure.

Second Chance is the story of my experience with kidney failure, including the challenges of preparing for a kidney transplant, while managing the chronic health diseases of high blood pressure and diabetes. After the devastating diagnosis of kidney failure, the evaluation process and diagnostic tests for placement on the kidney transplant waiting list were stressful and demanding. Equally disconcerting was the realization of the severe shortage of kidney organ donors throughout the healthcare system.  Finally, my journey with kidney failure concluded following the life-saving kidney transplant surgery and recovery process, which allowed me a second chance to live a healthier life with purpose.

All the best to everyone in need of a kidney transplant. Keep the faith.
