I used to think the hardest part of getting a transplant was the waiting. Turns out, for a lot of people, the hardest part is never even getting the chance to wait.
A new study out of NYU Langone looked at more than 720,000 patients referred for kidney transplant and found that only 48% ever started evaluation. Less than half. Nineteen percent made the waitlist. Ten percent got a transplant. The rest? Stuck somewhere in a system that isn’t as fair as we’d like to believe.
I know my seat at this table wasn’t a given. It was a gift from my donor, from a medical team that walked me through every step. But not everyone gets that same walk. This research names some of the reasons why, and it’s worth sitting with.
